
The Hon. Derrick Charles Smith was born in Kingston to parents Isobel and Charles Smith on November 27, 1943. He attended Calabar High School and the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST), now the University of Technology (UTech). Smith married Kathleen Grier on December 7, 1978. The union produced three children: Duane, Jay and Derrick.
He made his foray into politics in 1980 as a member of the Senate where he remained until 1983. Smith then served as Member of Parliament (MP) for St. Andrew North-Western 1983-1989.
During his longest serving assignment in 38 years as a parliamentarian, Smith proudly represented the people of St. Andrew North-Western for 29 years as their MP.
Derrick Smith was appointed Minister of National Security in 2007 and remained until 2008, when he was reassigned to the Ministry of Mining and Telecommunications. Smith was conferred with the Order of Distinction, Commander Class (CD) by the Jamaican Government in 2005 for more than 20 years of dedicated service to politics. He retired from politics on January 15, 2018.
