I must join with the rest of Jamaica in expressing shock and outrage at the brutal and calous attacks on our children, some of whom are being targeted in or near our schools. As a society we must take this issues very seriously and move decisively to ensure that those who prey on the innocent have no refuge among us.

It has been almost non-stop celebration by this nation since the first race was won - the 100 meters in record breaking time by Usain (Bolt). Every other triumph by our athletes in Beijing has kept the jubilation going and so it continued when we welcomed home the team members who returned prior to this week.

It is with a feeling of deep loss, that I pay tribute to the late Alton Ellis, a legend and an irreplaceable talent.

I don't think Alton recognized the power of his music. He was quite happy entertaining his fans on records or through live performances displaying a humility which with all his success - he never lost.

Status update on Damage to the Sector

The 2008 School year should have started on September 1 however due to the passage of Tropical Storm Gustav we decided to facilitate the recovery process in the education sector; as a result we will officially begin the school year on September 3rd.
