Opposition Leader Andrew Holness in response to the growing controversy regarding Minister Paulwell’s handling of the 381 MW Energy plant, has written to Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller imploring her to act immediately on her return from the ACS Summit in Mexico.  Holness said: “Just yesterday the Prime Minister ended her presentation calling for action, accountability and efficiency – let us see if  she will ‘walk the talk’.

At the North Clarendon constituency conference on Sunday, Opposition Leader Andrew Holness encouraged young people to partner with him and the JLP to carve a new future for Jamaica. Speaking to a large crowd, at the Staceyville Primary School, two-thirds of whom were young people, Mr Holness said he was encouraged by the massive turnout and the spirit of involvement of the people present at the meeting.

Mr. Holness encouraged the crowd to take a stand and work alongside him to develop a growth path for Jamaica anchored on a knowledge-based economy.

Opposition Leader Mr. Andrew Holness, has announced today, the appointment of Mrs Fayval Williams to the Party's Council of Deputy Spokespersons with a focus on Finance.

Mrs. Williams has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Personally and as Leader of the Opposition, I am truly saddened that an important social institution such as the Alpha Boy's Home will be closing its residential care facility.  The Alpha Boys Home has been around since 1880 as a place of safety and care for boys in difficult circumstances. More than that, its music programme has undoubtedly contributed significantly to Jamaica's music and culture. In the totality of the circumstances, I am calling on the Prime Minister to take a special look the situation and to increase funding and psycho-social support to the home.

Deputy Opposition Spokesman on the Environment, Councillor Duane Smith, has raised concern about another fire, which has reportedly started at the Riverton Landfill/Dump, and its effects on residents in the surrounding communities.

According to Councillor Smith, whose Chancery Hall division includes portions of Duhaney Park, close to the Riverton area, the situation is even worse for the residents on this occasion as most of them are at home or attending Easter Saturday church and other functions within the area.

We have been taking note of the volatile actions and have been demonstrating our opposition via multiple mediums. Jamaica Labour Party M.P. Shahine Robinson today lambasted the management of the National Water Commission for being inept, uncaring and unresponsive in addressing her constituent’s unmet need for water.

Mrs. Robinson passionately said “The dry water pipes and unfilled storage drums of thousands of households in North East St Ann tell the people’s stories. My team and I have repeatedly called, written, emailed and generally harassed local, regional and central management but have gotten no relief for the thousands of households across the constituency.”

Opposition Spokesperson on Housing and Transport, Dr. Horace Chang, in commenting on the Governor General’s recent Throne Speech, stated that the Government’s announcement that through the NHT it only built 2700 units last year, and will only be building 2000 units this year, shows that the Government does not have the will or the management skill to provide enough housing for the hard working contributors of the NHT.

Jamaica Labour Party Deputy Spokesperson on Labour and Social Security, Floyd Green, is urging the Government to use this year’s Budget to tackle the grave problem of youth unemployment. Mr. Green says that for the past two years the policies of the government have resulted in the unemployment rate among young people spiraling out of control, and that urgent steps must be taken to address it in this year’s budget.

West Kingston MP Desmond McKenzie has committed to write the Prime Minister further to the observations of the Public Defender that the Commission of Enquiry into the events of May 2010, as currently planned, makes no sense. MP McKenzie added that the JLP has publicly stated many times that the human rights abuses cannot be exposed without the very same tools recommended in the Public Defender's Interim Report.
