The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), has joined the other voices that have welcomed the recent announcement by the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. George Osbourne, that the Air Passenger Duty (APD), will be reformed effective April 1, 2015.

Opposition Spokesperson on Tourism, Mrs. Shahine Robinson, stated that the decision by the UK government to reform the APD, was a welcomed victory for the Caribbean region, which has seen a reduction in passenger arrivals from the United Kingdom (UK), due in part to the onerous tax on travel.

Responding to announcements that Ms Velma Hylton Q.C. has decided not to sit as a part of the Commission of Enquiry into the 2010 Events in West Kingston, Jamaica Labour Party MP for West Kingston stated that he appreciated the decision of the Attorney at Law.
“I wish to say clearly on behalf of my constituents and the Jamaica Labour Party that our objection to Velma Hylton was not an objection to the person, but to the danger of bias against the residents of West Kingston.

The Opposition Jamaica Labour, through two of its spokespersons, has expressed serious concerns about the raging fire at the Riverton landfill and the way the facility is being managed.  Spokespersons on Local Government and the Environment - Mr. Desmond McKenzie and Dr. Andrew Wheatley respectively, have blamed the fire and others like it to negligence on the part of the Government and the agencies responsible for its operations.

In a further reaction to the management and Board upheaval revealed at the HAJ this week,  Opposition Spokesperson Horace Chang singled out depositors of the Dunbeholden housing project for protection and pointedly asked Housing Minister Dr Omar Davies, when he will deliver their housing units.

Dr Chang insisted that political interference has delayed delivery despite the use of an innovative model structured to deliver cost effective housing units despite government's funding constraints.

Karl Samuda Opposition Spokesman on Industry Investment Mining and Energy has indicated that he is concerned by the Consumer Affairs’ Commission’s failure to publish  food prices surveys for more than a year.   The Consumer Affairs Commission, he observed, is empowered to compile information on any business or trade, and to assist consumers in making choices as to how they should spend their hard earned money.  He went on to ask whether the government was trying to hide true inflation from average consumers.

At a meeting of the Central Executive of the Jamaica Labour Party on Sunday March 9, the Leader of the JLP, Mr. Andrew Holness, members of the meeting, that a legal team had been appointed to protect the human rights of the people of West Kingston, to seek to have the truth told, and to look into the fairness and impartiality of the imminent Commission of Enquiry.  Mr. Holness advised the meeting that the legal team was headed by Alexander Williams, the Opposition Spokesperson on Justice and includes Mr. Harold Malcom, a human rights law lecturer at UTECH.

“Unacceptable!”, is the response from Dr Andrew Wheatley Opposition spokesperson on ICT & Digital Economy to the Government's recent announcement of a fourth shift in the deadline of the implementation of the much touted number portability programme. Commenting on the recent statement by State Minister Julian Robinson that number portability implementation will be completed by the end of 2014, Wheatley remarked, "One is forced to question if number portability will be implemented at all given these latest utterances by Minister Robinson".
