Opposition Spokesman on Local Government, Desmond McKenzie, is calling for the immediate suspension of normal administrative operations at the Hanover Parish Council in light of the egregious breakdown in accountability and financial integrity, which has resulted in the Contractor General taking interest in the entity once again.

Mr. McKenzie said: “Information has been brought to the attention of the Opposition, calling into question yet again, financial integrity and stewardship at the Hanover Parish Council. This latest round of allegations regarding malfeasance and other forms of professional misconduct at the Council, should not be taken lightly as the situation is doing great damage to the reputation of the Hanover Parish Council, and by extension, the local government system as a whole.”

He continued: “The situation in Hanover has gotten to a point where the immediate intervention of the Ministry of Local Government is required. The ministry must not only take control of the Council for the time being, but ensure that a forensic audit is quickly undertaken. It is also imperative that the customary flow of funds to the Hanover Parish Council is halted, and steps are taken by the ministry to ensure that documentation pertinent to a forensic audit are secured and made available for scrutiny.”

Mr. McKenzie says in the interest of transparency, accountability and securing value for money, the forensic audit should be undertaken and strong internal controls implemented before a return to normality at the Hanover Parish Council can be considered.
