Opposition Spokesperson on Information, Youth, Sports, Culture and Gender Affairs, Ms. Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, had these words to say in recognition of the upcoming Nelson Mandela International Day on Friday, July 18, 2014:

Nelson Mandela is one of the greatest human beings that has ever walked the earth and his legacy is one that cannot be denied. He has taught us so much about selflessness and humanitarianism and there is much that we can learn from his works and teachings.

Mandela’s recognition of the value of sports, culture, gender equality and youth development in the growth of developing nations was well known to all. To South Africa he was the ‘Great Madiba” or “Tata” – father of the nation of a free South Africa. He also demonstrated a strong commitment to the advancement of and empowerment of women in his society and understood the role of sports in bridging cultural gaps and creating a common interest.

Jamaicans have always respected Nelson Mandela and showed a great outpouring of love and appreciation of his fight for freedom and what he achieved for his people. So as we celebrate the great Madiba’s birthday, Friday, July 18, 2014, as Nelson Mandela International Day, I want to encourage all Jamaicans to take time out to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela and to recognise his exceptional contribution to fighting racism and promoting freedom and respect for all mankind. Through his words and actions, he created an environment for the development of the African continent and the unification of the African Diaspora. I truly believe that in celebrating his life, it is important that we seek to build on the foundation that he has created.

Nelson Mandela dedicated 67 years of his life to serving his fellow human beings. Let us commit 67 minutes of our time and live the theme, “Take Action; Inspire Change; Make Every Day a Mandela Day”. Remember that by doing our part, each and every one of us can make a difference.
