Opposition Spokesman on National Security, Derrick Smith, is condemning the killing of 12 year old Jamelia Johnson, whose lifeless body was on Friday, found discarded in bushes near her home in Riversdale, St. Catherine.

Mr. Smith says law-abiding Jamaicans are agonizing at this hour as hopes of finding the adolescent alive, following reports earlier in the week that she was missing, were dashed with Friday's heart-wrenching discovery of her body.

The Opposition Spokesman said: "We cannot continue like this as a society.  This kind of savagery and barbarism should not be unleashed upon anyone, let alone innocent and vulnerable children.  Murders being perpetrated against our children, the future of our country, are becoming far too frequent and heinous."

Smith continued: "I note with concern, suspicion among residents in the area that a man suspected to have been involved in an inappropriate relationship with the young girl, may be responsible for this despicable act.  Amid reports that he has been away from the area since the adolescent went missing, the police are being urged to vigorously pursue this and other leads in apprehending Jamelia's killer in the shortest possible time."

Mr. Smith said in closing: "The Opposition is again imploring parents, guardians, and citizens in general, to be especially vigilant where the nation's children are concerned.  Do not hesitate to bring any suspicion of inappropriate relations between adults and children to the attention of the authorities.  Our society must return to the days where we are our brother's keeper, and entire communities are involved in the upbringing of our children."
