Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party Councillor Caucus in the KSAC, Councillor Winston Ennis has condemned the brazen attack on PNP Councillor Venesha Phillips of the Papine Division, by gunmen yesterday.
He says, “We are very disturbed and outraged by this dastardly and cruel attack on our colleague, Councillor Phillips, who decided to act fairly in the distribution of work. We are heartened that she was not injured in the incident, and commend her for being courageous to do the right thing in the face of threats and eventually coming under gunfire.”
Councillor Ennis added, “This attack upon an elected representative is an attack on the very democracy that we seek to uphold as a country. We must continue to ensure that work and benefits are being distributed without fear or favour, irrespective of political persuasion. This violent, desperate and backward action has no place in our modern society and the Councillors of Jamaica Labour Party unreservedly condemns this behaviour.”
Councillor Ennis concluded, “Jamaicans are tired of this sort of behaviour that threatens to erode the gains we have made as a maturing democracy. We therefore call upon the authorities to ensure that speedy investigations are done so that due justice is served, thereby preventing any further incidents of this kind”.
