Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) caretaker for South West St. Elizabeth, Floyd Green is calling on the Minister of Tourism & Entertainment, Hon. Dr. Wykeham McNeill to provide an urgent update on the status of the road work promised for the Mountainside to Watchwell road in South West St. Elizabeth.

Floyd Green stated “We had hoped that the Minister was seized with the severe need for repair and the urgency of the situation, it appears that is not the case. The community of Mountainside, birthplace of former Prime Minister Donald Sangster has almost been cut off with all access roads in terrible condition. Daily, residents and public passenger operators are put to tremendous expense and inconvenience as they attempt to maneuver the almost impassable terrain. Yet to date no work has started and no time frame is yet to be outlined by the Minister or the Member of Parliament.”

“It is a shame that 8 months after the people have expressed their frustration with the deplorable conditions of the roads in the area by way of multiple demonstrations there is still no progress” said a disappointed Green.

During his sectorial presentation in April of this year, Dr. McNeil announced that the road work would be financed with funds from the Tourism Enhancement Fund’s (TEF) and the Road Maintenance Fund (RMF).

Green says that the Minister must give a time frame for when the roadwork is set to begin and how long it will take until completion. Green also called upon the Minister to expand the scope of the work to encompass the Cross Roads to Billy’s Bay Corridor, which runs through Treasure Beach.

“Treasure Beach is the undisputed Tourism Mecca of the South Coast and the Minister should not take a piecemeal approach to the infrastructural work for the area. The entire road network in the area is in dire need of repair and as has been done in other parts of the country where an elegant corridor is created, the Minister should contemplate initiatives of this kind that can comprehensively enhance the South Coast Tourism Product” said Green.
