Good Business Sense, UC Rusal ALPART Re-Opening - Samuda

‘This is not surprising, it just makes good business sense,’ is the response of Karl Samuda JLP Spokesperson on Mining and Energy portfolios, in answer to the governments indication of reopening of the Alpart bauxite plant. ‘UC Rusal is one the largest producers of bauxite in the world, and this plant has excellent resources.  This decision of UC Rusal has less to do with any threats from the Minister but must be regarded as just common business sense.’ Mr Samuda opined.

Mr Samuda identified electricity as the real challenge of the re-opening. He said, ‘We note that they plan to utilise a coal fire plant and this is being undertaken by ESET in conjunction with the JPS but this has cost implications and raises a number of questions. The broader and more critical question for all Jamaicans must be, ‘What is the government’s progress on reducing the cost of electricity for all Jamaicans and to make the country more investment friendly?’

Nothwithstanding his concern he stated that, ‘This is welcomed news for the country especially for communities in the southern belt parishes of St Elizabeth and Manchester. The opportunity of jobs and economic benefits for the local economy of all affected districts cannot be discounted.’
