2014 Teachers' Day Message from Andrew Holness

Teaching is a most important avenue for contributing to the development of a country and its people.  Educators play a vital role in shaping the lives of our citizens and therefore, the state of the nation itself. Good teachers, memorable teachers, teach us much more than subjects; they help to teach us to live positively by their words and their actions. A simple 'thank you' for all that they do for us, can never be enough, but on this day every year we take time out to recognize the awesome contribution many of our teachers make day in, day out.

We often hear more about those teachers that are not necessarily the most effective of instructors than about those who quietly and competently go about their lesson planning and engaging their students without any form of bias and igniting that critical spark of learning. Research has shown us the world over how critical teacher expectations are to student achievement. I am sure most of us can recall a teacher who encouraged us to be the best we can be.  Many of us are where we are today because we were fortunate to have been students of thoughtful, diligent and nurturing teachers.

Today and throughout Child’s Month, I encourage you to take some time out and thank a teacher - your own or your child's- for his/her contributions to the quality of your life and that of others. A simple thank you can go a long way. If you can, volunteer to read to a class or speak to a class about a topic you love or the job that you do and concretely support your teacher in his/her work.  On behalf of the Opposition and the Jamaica Labor Party, on this Teachers' Day, I congratulate the nation's teachers for their yeoman service in often challenging circumstances. I also encourage those who may be considering the teaching profession as a career option to give it a try - I did that and that experience has certainly positively shaped the course of my life.

As you continue blazing a trail as educators of a nation, I urge you to recommit yourselves to the profession; endeavouring always, to inspire others, impart knowledge and brighten the world around you.
