Opposition Spokesperson Calls for Swift Preventative Action Regarding Ebola

Opposition Spokesperson on Health Dr. Kenneth Baugh, is calling on Minister of Health Dr. Fenton Ferguson, to act speedily and decisively to implement measures to deal with the possible importation of the deadly Ebola Virus to Jamaica.

ActionAid International reported that the virus which has killed more than 670 in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, is the "worst the world has ever seen". This, Dr. Baugh said, is reason that the matter be taken seriously.

Dr. Baugh explained that symptoms begin with fever, muscle pain and a sore throat, then rapidly escalate to vomiting, diarrhea and internal and external bleeding. He said that the incubation period can be up to 21 days.

Dr Baugh said: "The Ministry of Health must ensure that the country is in a state of readiness, that medical personnel are equipped to deal with any eventuality, and that systems are in place to ensure that individuals arriving from countries where there has been an outbreak are quarantined."

In closing, he suggested that the country should also issue cautions to travellers planning to visit these countries and that systems are in place to ensure proper surveillance of individuals arriving from countries where there has been an outbreak.
