JLP Welcomes Appointment Of Carl Williams As New Commissioner

The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party today congratulated Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Carl Williams on his selection from the field of worthy candidates for the post of Commissioner of Police.

Opposition Spokesman on National Security Derrick Smith said “We had felt that DCP Williams was among the likeliest of choices for the position, based on his performance in the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), his 30 years of experience as a police officer and his reputation as a team player. He also brings to the office years of experience at various levels of the force in fighting crimes such as narcotics and lottery scamming.”

Mr. Smith called on the men and women of the JCF to give him their full support in carrying out his duties as Commissioner.  He also said the JLP expects the Commissioner to be fearless and objective in fulfilling his mandate, and not to allow the Force be used in the pursuit of any agenda which is counter to the general interest of the society.

He said “We are encouraging him to pay full attention to the perceptions of corruption and violence in the police force. He must seek to remove the smear of corruption from the JCF, as well as the perception that there is no deeply held respect for the human and civil rights of ordinary Jamaicans.”

He pointed out that the Opposition recognizes that these are immense challenges for the new Commissioner, but that with the cooperation of all stakeholders including the men and women at all levels of the JCF, they could be overcome.

In closing, he stated that the JLP looks forward to a high level of cooperation and interaction with the new Commissioner, and hopes that among the major planks of his Office will be objectivity, transparency and honesty.
