CHIKUNGUNYA: ACTION NEEDED IN ST. THOMAS - RECOMMEND PARTNERSHIP WITH TELECOMS COMPANIES

Despite repeated protestations by the Minister of Health and MP for St. Thomas Eastern, ground zero for the chikV epidemic, Dr. Fenton Ferguson of increased vector control activities in combatting the chikungunya epidemic, residents up to this hour complain bitterly of not seeing anything of substance happening on the ground. This was noted today by Delano Seiveright, JLP caretaker for St. Thomas Eastern

He insisted, 'This is completely unacceptable as it dangerously diminishes the Ministry’s credibility and offers fertile ground for rampant misinformation.'

Seiveright went on to observe, As such I call on the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Local Government, the Parish Council and other government agencies to step up vector control activities in the following areas of St. Thomas Eastern, some of which are seeing half of the population directly affected:

·         Morant Bay and all surrounding communities
·         Church Corner
·         Lyssons
·         Johns Town
·         Arcadia
·         Pear Tree River
·         Port Morant
·         Leith Hall
·         Prospect
·         Retreat
·         Duckenfield
·         Dalvey
·         Hampton Court
·         Golden Grove
·         Winchester
·         Barking Lodge
·         Amity Hall
·         Rowlandsfied
·         Wheelersfield
·         Bath
While we continue to encourage residents to take greater care of their surroundings, I hereby call on the Ministry to partner with telecommunications companies DIGICEL and LIME to text important FACTS to the phones of persons in the most affected areas. This will undoubtedly help to curb misinformation held by far too many residents.

In closing he noted, "Attention must also be brought to the fact that the overwhelming majority of those affected refuse to go to a medical doctor and as such resort to medicating themselves, which is risky."
