Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Caretaker for St. Thomas Eastern, Delano Seiveright today read and presented gifts to the children of the First Step Pre-school & Early Childhood Institution as part of the Read Across Jamaica Day outreach activities. He was joined by Councilor for the Dalvey Division, Mr. Michael McLeod.

Mr. Seiveright in speaking with the School’s Founder Ms. Stacey-Ann Henry emphasized the importance of reading and the need for more support to be given to schools in the Parish. He also guaranteed additional learning resources for the school from private sector contributors.

Mr. Seiveright noted that St. Thomas was the last parish in Jamaica to get a High School (Morant Bay High School, 1961) thereby leaving the parish lagging behind for a long time. He stated that education is crucial to turning the parish away from extreme poverty and underdevelopment, that now ranks it as Jamaica ’s poorest parish, and attracting investment.
